Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD Mid-Drive Installation Guide

Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD Mid-Drive Installation Guide

This guide covers the full Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD mid-drive installation path: bike measurements, tools, drivetrain removal, motor mounting, controls, wiring, battery connection, and first checks. Use the preserved video with the canonical Help steps. Keep the battery disconnected until every other electrical connection is complete.

Confirm mid-drive fitment before removing parts

Compatibility depends on bottom-bracket type, shell width, inner diameter, shell thickness, chainstay clearance, and frame obstructions. The BBS02 uses a 68–73 mm threaded BSA/JIS shell. BBSHD versions cover 68–73 mm, 74–100 mm, and 101–120 mm ranges. Measure the bare frame shell, not the crank or spindle.

Check for a cable guide, weld ridge, tab, or unusual shell shape that could block the motor. Use the mid-drive fitment guide and motor templates. Press-fit shells require third-party adaptation and dimensional review by a qualified bike shop. Do not force a motor into a shell or remove frame material.

Gather tools and prepare the bike

Mid-drive work needs a square-taper crank puller, a bottom-bracket tool matched to the bike, and a Bafang M33 lockring wrench. Standard supplies include a pedal wrench, metric hex keys, screwdrivers, chain tool, torque wrench covering about 5–50 Nm, blue thread locker, bicycle grease or anti-seize, cable ties, cutters, and a T20 security Torx bit for the speed-sensor magnet.

Support the bike, shift to the smallest rear cog, and photograph the existing drivetrain and cable routes. Disconnect and remove the battery if one is already present.

Watch the BBS02 and BBSHD installation video

The verified video provides the visual installation sequence. Use the sections below as the technical checklist and stop if a part does not seat as shown.

Remove the original drivetrain

  1. Remove the pedals. The left pedal is reverse-threaded. Note both thread directions before applying force.
  2. Remove the crank arms and chain. Use the crank puller; do not hammer the arms. Open the chain with the correct tool and joining method.
  3. Remove the bottom bracket. Match the tool and thread direction to the installed unit. Stop and use a bike shop if leverage risks frame damage.
  4. Prepare the shell. Remove an under-shell cable guide only when its normal fastener allows it, then clean and gently deburr the shell. Do not alter structural frame material.

Mount the Bafang mid-drive motor

  1. Insert the motor from the drive side. Lightly grease the spindle, slide it through the shell, and rotate the motor body toward the frame without forcing it.
  2. Fit the fixing plate. Seat it flat against the shell and install the correct bolts for the measured width.
  3. Tighten the inner lockring. Apply blue thread locker and torque the inner M33 lockring to about 50 Nm.
  4. Install the outer locknut when threads allow. On a 73 mm BBS02 setup, follow the separate spacer procedure; the outer lockring often does not reach.
  5. Install chainring, cranks, and pedals. Torque square-taper crank bolts to about 35–40 Nm. Size the chain and check chainline throughout the cassette.

Install controls, sensors, wiring, and battery mount

Mount the speed sensor on the left chainstay and position the spoke magnet to pass it with a 5–10 mm gap. Install the display, control pad, throttle, and the brake-cutoff option selected for the existing brakes. Add the optional gear sensor inline with the mechanical derailleur cable.

Align Higo connector arrows and keyways, then push each connection straight together. Do not twist or force a plug. Route wires away from the tires, chain, crank, heat, and moving controls, leaving enough slack for full steering.

Confirm battery space and mount details with the battery template guide. Install the rail or rack using its documented path, but keep the battery off the bike and electrically disconnected until all other connections and cable checks are complete.

Run the first power-on and pre-ride checks

  1. Raise the drive wheel. Make sure it and the drivetrain can turn without touching the stand or floor.
  2. Connect the battery last. Seat and lock it, turn on the display, and set the correct wheel diameter using its model-specific manual.
  3. Test at low power. Check throttle, pedal assist, each brake cutoff, gear-sensor response if installed, and the speed reading.
  4. Inspect the bike. Confirm braking, wheel retention, cable clearance, crank and pedal attachment, motor lockring, battery retention, and normal steering.
  5. Recheck hardware. The canonical procedure calls for checking the inner lockring and crank hardware after the first rides and again within the first 50–100 miles. This is a maintenance interval, not a mileage outcome.

Common BBS02 and BBSHD installation problems

  • Motor will not enter the shell: check diameter, burrs, welds, and cable guides. Do not force it.
  • Motor rotates: recheck the inner M33 lockring, blue thread locker, and approximately 50 Nm torque.
  • Chain drops or runs noisily: check chain length and chainline through the cassette.
  • No power or Error 30: remove the battery, inspect and reseat every keyed connection, then use the installation power checklist.
  • 73 mm shell: follow the 73 mm BBS02 spacer guide.
